The Lenovo ThinkPad 2 – Powered by Windows 8 – Will Cost $799

The Lenovo ThinkPad 2 – Powered by Windows 8 – Will Cost $799.

Lenovo has revealed that its first Windows 8 tablet, the ThinkPad 2, will cost $799 upon release. You do get a keyboard dock thrown in for that (over-the-top) asking price, which is a nice touch, but perhaps not a big enough one to persuade ordinary consumers to crack open their wallets and purses.

Windows 8 is being released on Oct. 26, and alongside Microsoft’s latest operating system will come a range of tablets powered by it. As well as Microsoft’s own Surface, which we’ve yet to find out the final pricing details for, there will be the ThinkPad 2 from Lenovo, which we do now know the final pricing details for.
Previous rumors had the price of the Lenovo ThinkPad 2 pegged at between $600 and $700, but, as revealed to WP Central, it’s actually going to cost $799. For that you’ll get a Windows 8 tablet with a 10.1-inch 1366×768-pixel IPS screen, and a (rumored) 1.8GHz Clover Trail processor. ThinkPad 2 will also boast a 10-hour battery life, two cameras: 8MP on the back, 2MP on the front, LTE, NFC, and USB. A full-sized keyboard dock will come as standard, as will Office 2013.

Lenovo has been quick to point out that the ThinkPad 2 is being geared towards enterprise customers rather than mainstream consumers. Hence the added functionality and subsequent higher price tag. This is being seen as a replacement for a laptop rather than the toy some people describe the likes of the iPad, the Nexus 7, and the Kindle Fire. $799 would buy you an entry-level ultrabook, but this would be nowhere near as powerful.
The Lenovo ThinkPad 2 certainly looks good, but then all of the Windows 8 tablets so far revealed have the aesthetics in place. What we don’t yet know is how this tablet, or any of the Windows 8 tablets, will actually perform. We have to hope they are more than capable, or Windows 8 will be pretty much redundant from day one. And Microsoft will surely have to concede defeat to Apple and Google on this new front.
